Answer
Future active travel routes within our towns and cities will be prioritised primarily in line with the emerging Active Travel Delivery Plan. Officials are currently reviewing responses to the public consultation, which closed in February 2025, and I hope to publish the final plan later this year. When complete, the Active Travel Delivery Plan will complement the Belfast Cycling Network Delivery Plan and the Strategic Plan for Greenways to provide a firm basis for prioritising delivery of improved active travel infrastructure for the next ten years and beyond.
Delivery of greenways is generally council led with my Department funding up to 50% of the capital cost of delivering approved projects. My officials engage regularly with councils on their greenway priorities and any other active travel related initiatives.
My Department is also considering potential future improvements to pedestrian and cycling infrastructure between Moira and the train station. Design development is at an early stage and engagement with stakeholders and the public will commence once plans are suitably developed.
