Answer
My department is considering potential future improvements to pedestrian and cycling infrastructure between Moira and the train station.
While there are no plans to change the rural street lighting policy at this time, I am conscious that street lighting can contribute significantly to feelings of personal security and safety, particularly for women travelling at night. This is an important consideration when officials are developing proposals to improve pedestrian and cycling facilities to key destinations with the aim of encouraging modal shift. However, the desire for lighting must be balanced against environmental considerations, our desire to reduce the carbon footprint and electricity costs associated with our infrastructure, and limited budgets.
Design development is at an early stage and engagement with stakeholders and the public will commence once plans are suitably developed.
