Answer

My Department has previously introduced measures to improve traffic flow and road safety in Moira including the signalisation of the Main Street/Meeting Street junction, a road marking scheme to provide right turn pockets into local retail sites and a garage outlet between Backwood Road and the Old Kilmore Road junction.

We have also looked at a number of options to prevent traffic from queuing back to the M1 Westbound Motorway off-slip in the evening peak. To date, the costs of these options have been considered too prohibitive to be progressed further at this time.

The village’s future transport needs, being situated within the Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council area, will be considered as part of the new Eastern Transport Plan being developed by the Department. The plan will take account of the growth ambitions of Lisburn and Castlereagh city and other councils in the plan catchment area and will consider potential transport interventions for Moira.
