Answer
The Education Authority (EA) has advised that provision is available for young people with a Statement of Special Educational Needs to transfer to a special school at post-16 where this is considered the most appropriate placement to meet their assessed needs. All placements are determined through the statutory annual review process, which takes account of the young person’s needs, parental preference, and the availability of suitable provision.
For pupils attending Specialist Provisions, transition planning begins in advance of their 16th birthday and involves collaboration between the school, EA services, the young person and their parents/carers. Where a special school placement is identified as appropriate, the EA will seek to identify a suitable placement, subject to capacity and admissions criteria.
In addition, a range of post-16 pathways may be considered, including continued placement in mainstream with support, special school provision, or specialist further education settings, depending on individual need.
