Answer
It is currently illegal to use e-scooters on public roads and public spaces here and I have no plans to change that position. Anyone using an e-scooter illegally may be subject to enforcement action by the PSNI.
The Department is exploring measures to raise awareness around the dangers associated with e-scooters.
The Department is also monitoring the progress of a pilot scheme for rental e-scooters in Britain, as well as the impact of the legislative changes in the south which made the use of e-scooters legal and regulated their use on public roads from May 2024. This evidence base can help inform the department of what steps to take in relation to the registration and regulation of e-scooters.
