Answer
I am committed towards implementing the pay awards in a timely manner. My aim has been, and will be in the years to come, to have the pay award in Northern Ireland paid to a similar timescale as in England.
My officials are working with the Review Body on Doctors’ and Dentists’ Remuneration to ensure recommendations are received as early as possible to allow maximum time to secure and implement the pay award. However, there is a need to recognise the challenge my Department faces in relation to our budget and the challenging financial position my Department finds itself in.
Additionally, as with any pay award, there is a process that must be followed before it is paid to staff. My Department require approval from the Department of Finance prior to issuing a revised pay circular. From the date of issue of the circular, BSO require a period of 12 weeks to request, test and implement the required IT changes.
I recognise the importance of avoiding delays in implementing pay awards and I remain committed to ensuring that, for now and in the future, our HSC workforce is fairly rewarded for their vital contributions.
